Study Snack Hack

It’s that time of the year again; we are finally into our last week of classes for the fall semester. The Christmas market in town is proof that all the fun things going on surrounding the holiday season are so close and I’m sure we all can hardly wait, but one huge thing stands between us and a Christmas ham: exams!

I understand, as a student, just how stressful and exhausting this time leading up to our exams can be. We are spending long hours in the library and not leaving until we know we’ve completed our tasks for that day..and that is tough! What I find the most difficult personally is staying motivated and focused when my body feels expended. When I feel this way, I tend to take a break to just decompress, grab a snack or coffee and head back to the books. The worst thing you can do is go and take a study break and eat things that will actually make you more lethargic and unfocused. I’m writing this brief blog post to just offer some ideas for healthier, more energizing snacks than just a Smokey’s muffin that you can easily pack for yourself to bring with you studying.

Ideas:

  • Hummus and vegetable sticks (carrots, celery, peppers)
  • Apples, peanut or almond butter, and granola
  • Frozen fruit with yogurt (just freeze fresh blueberries, raspberries, or anything with yogurt and voila!)
  • Homemade trail mix however you like with mixed nuts (almonds, cashews, peanuts), dried cranberries or raisins, maybe some chocolate chips if you’re feeling crazy
  • Avocado toast (add literally anything..go sweet and top with strawberries or make it more savory and opt for chickpeas, tomato, and onion)
  • Hard boiled egg and a fruit (banana, apple, orange)
  • Roasted edamame and chickpeas
  • And if you have a little more time on your hands I will link a website here that has loads of really yummy protein ball recipes that are perfectly filling and energizing snacks for long days studying!

https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/food-recipes/healthy/g4892/protein-ball-recipes/

P.S don’t forget the Hub kitchen is open everyday for you to prepare these yummy snacks or leave some things in the communal refrigerator or freezer!

Ok, that’s all I’ve got for now, but think positive, eat well, get sleep, study hard, and good luck on those exams!

Whats New News November 5th 2018

Image result for fake news

Welcome to the first ‘Whats New News’! Here you can keep up to date on what current events are happening in the world, along with tips and tricks on how to stay informed. It’s always difficult to keep your ear to the ground in college so today we’ll be doling out a few tips on how to stay current, and avoid fake news (I know, its very exciting stuff).

First off, what is fake news? Well you’ve probably heard by now that its any story that is reported to be true but is in fact, well, fake. According to google trends this phenomena was relatively unheard of until it exploded in November 2016. This can largely be attributed to Donald Trump, who at the time attacked the American media regarding any negative coverage as ‘Fake News’ during his presidential campaign. This trend reached its peak interest in January of this year due to the controversy between American President Trump and Robert Mueller, who was leading the investigation for ties between Russia and Trump.

Since then fake news has been a topic of much debate. But today I’m going to give a few tips on how to stay informed and how to avoid fake news.

  1. Trustworthy News Outlets Get your news from a variety of established and respected news sources. A handy way to check if an organisations website is more secure and legitimate is if their URL has a https rather than just http. The S stands for secure, and is only awarded to websites that have achieved the standards for a SSL certificate.
  2. Opinions vs Facts – While most respected organisations strive to maintain unbiased news reporting, learn to notice the different language used when news is presented. Furthermore be aware of when the reporting has gone from stating clear facts and statements, and when opinions and thoughts are being expressed
  3. Vary Your News Sources – Public outlets such as RTE and BBC are held to a higher standard of unbiased news, however private sources such as CNN and Fox News, don’t have these same restrictions. Bias is unavoidable but use it as  a chance to hear opinions you wouldn’t normally be exposed to. Listen to the reporting of story from a right-wing organisation such as Fox, and then a left-wing organisation such as CNN, and then make your own opinion.
  4. Check Your Sources Sources – It may seem like a lot of work, but its always worth it to check out what sources news outlets use. Ensure your news outlet at least lists their sources, and then decide if you trust these sources.
  5. Right Medium for Your Media  – Pick a medium that suits you best to get your news. Find something convenient that you know your going to check regularly. For example if you watch TV then the 6 o’clock news on RTE will be perfect for you. If you prefer to watch YouTube then check out large outlets channels, as well as independent reporters such as Phillip DeFranco. If you like to read check out different websites such as the Irish Independent or New York times.

I know it takes a lot to stay informed nowadays, but its always worth it to know whats going on in the world. Stay tuned to find out whats new in the news.

Week 5 – Mental Health Week

Today is World Mental Health Day and this week at NUIG it’s Mental Health Week!

Uni can be a very stressful time in everyone’s life and getting on top of your mental health is an important aspect of it. There are loads of activities going on this week to help you out!

Information on the NUIG Counselling Services can be found here. If you are feeling down or just need a chat and a cup of tea, the Hub is open and the Wellness Crew are here to help!

The Hub – Your student common room!

Image result for the hub nuig

It’s that time of year again, the beginning of the academic calendar at NUI Galway! To all new students beginning their time here, you are very welcome! And to those of you returning for another year, we’re glad you came back to join us!

For all new students, and returning students for that matter, I want to tell you about The Hub. The Hub is your student common room, perfect for meeting up with friends, a place to enjoy a cuppa between lectures, or cook a bit of food for yourself. I mentioned there was a fully kitted out kitchen for students to use throughout the day, right?? The kitchen has got everything you need to reheat yesterdays leftovers, whip up your signature dish from scratch, or simply cook a frozen pizza from Tesco! There are also 2 additional microwaves located within The Hub itself.

There is a supply of tea and biscuits available  in the kitchen, we only ask that you clean up after yourself, wash your cups, and don’t go overboard on the biscuits, a pretty fair deal I’m sure you’ll agree! We have a little donation box left on the kitchen counter to help us pay for supplies of milk, biscuits etc. so anything you can give is greatly appreciated.

We also have a games cupboard, with a nice selection of both board and card games for your enjoyment. If you want to borrow one, simply bring your Student ID and ask a member of the WELL Crew, who would be more than happy to oblige! We are a friendly bunch here in The Hub, and our goal is to create a relaxed, welcoming environment in YOUR common room for all students. We encourage you to share ideas with us about things you would like to see in here, come and chat to us if you have any questions or queries and we will gladly do our best to help!

I look forward to the year ahead, and I hope to see many of you making The Hub your sitting-room/kitchen away from home!!

All the best,

Niall
